Featuring Charlotte Howell (Virtual Owl Marketing)

As 2025 opens up before us, you may be thinking about how to get your marketing right. That whole part of running a business can feel overwhelming. There’s so much you’re “supposed” to do, but it all takes time – and sometimes it can feel like you’re getting nothing in return. The idea of organic marketing (the type that gets you shared and read without paying a fortune for advertising) can feel like an impossible dream.

But there is a secret to it: the Power of 3. When your blog, social media and email communications work together in harmony, you create a hugely powerful foundation for your organic marketing, and when you get it right, surprisingly easy to manage each month.

And the Power of 3 doesn’t just make your life easier – it also communicates loud and clear with your audience, and consistently too – which is essential for securing those sales, and making that organic growth magic happen.

Let’s think of your monthly communications as a film – it’s a production you put out there each month to tell a story for you, to entertain and engage people who want to know more. Every blockbuster must have three key elements, working together to make it a success – and your monthly movie needs all three of them too…

1.     Your Blog: The Main Plot

Your blog is where your expertise, storytelling and solutions live. Having an active blog has so many benefits, from your ranking within search engines and your SEO, to forging those personal connections that buyers are looking to make with you – so it’s a must-have part of your regular marketing strategy.

Your blog post sets the scene for the story you’re telling this month – it’s the main plot of the movie. It’s the expertise you’re sharing, the product or service you want to promote, or the insight into why you love what you do. Your social media and email marketing can take their lead from it.  Once you’ve got your monthly blog post sorted, it’s not just content for your website – it’s material to feed into social media posts and email communications, and it’s the anchor for that polished, consistent messaging you’re putting out there.

2. Social Media: The Trailer

This is your movie’s trailer – it draws people in with its light-touch, short form posts about the main plot that’s easy to consume for your readers. It convinces them to visit your blog and read more. Share the link, reuse some of the content, and crystallise some of the tips and expertise you’ve put in the post into a series of posts for the month, so it’s all on the same theme.

But a great movie also has sub-plots and supporting characters that make the story richer and more interesting, and this is where your social media is the star. Around the posts about your main theme, you can talk about other things that make up your business – feature parts of your day in your Stories, throw in a reel or two about a customer you’ve helped.

Use your social media to promote the main theme, and enrich it with other posts that complement it – essential for variety, interest and sustaining the main plot of the film.

3. Email Marketing: The VIP Red Carpet

Your email list is your direct line to people who already care about what you do, and it’s your strongest tool for turning that interest into action and sales. Your email list are your VIPs – so give them some real value, as well as making them the first to see the movie each month.

Move right away from the traditional “newsletter” – it just doesn’t work like it used to. There’s got to be a good reason to open every email you send, so make sure what you send gives your VIPs access to your expertise – whether that’s through insights and tips, or early access to offers and events. And each month, you can link back some of the contents to your blog’s theme, to keep that consistent message going.

The Power of 3

Imagine trying to run a marketing campaign with just one of these elements. Your blog alone won’t reach your audience. Social media without a blog can feel shallow, and email marketing without fresh content gets stale – especially if it’s just a roundup of “news” each month.

When you bring them together, you get a seamless cycle:

  • Your blog provides the substance.
  • Social media spreads the word, and adds to the substance of the theme with some variety.
  • Email marketing opens the door for your VIPs and builds those connections.

When they work together, these three foundations create a consistent, engaging experience for your audience. That’s how you turn monthly marketing into results – that’s the Power of 3. When your blog, social media, and emails work together, your marketing works better. It’s as simple as that.
